Anti-smoking Ad

Poster encouraging people to quit smoking

My passion in Graphic Design is the creation of work that communicates social messages. This is the case here in this anti-smoking advertisement.

I scanned in an old black and white photo and used the Live Trace tool in Illustrator to create the tonal dropout. Then I simply changes the background colour to red, with the combination of red and black evoking feelings of danger. I coloured the cigarette in white to make it stand out amongst the background and created text in a matter that was subtle, with the image being the main hero.

With the text, I placed the tag line ‘Ever considered the health risks of smoking?’ in a manner that illustrated somebody smoking a cigarette. This was followed by the word ‘QUIT!’ being emphasised in capital letters and a white typeface.

This is a great example of how a simple poster design can be used to communicate a strong message on a significant social and health issue.
