Swan Hill Region

Vintage Car at Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement

Swan Hill is a small regional city on the banks of the Murray River, in Victoria’s north-west (located two hours from Bendigo and four hours from Melbourne). Many photos were taken of the Nyah district (a farming and river area located twenty minutes north of Swan Hill), a couple of lakes over the New South Wales (NSW) border and the Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement.

Well, you have done it again Daniel!
    terrific photos.
I lived on the Murray for 16 years I just loved seeing the photos of it. So good to see it with plenty of water once again.
My brother and his family, my aunt, uncle and cousins all lived in Nyah for many years.
My brother was the Education Officer at the Pioneer Settlement until a couple of years ago.
The Pioneer Settlement still looks good.
Nyah West is looking rather sad. I haven’t been there for years. I was interested to see Norma’s Hair Salon looking alive. Norma was a great character and was quite old and still working when I met her many years ago. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

    • I enjoy seeing the water everywhere myself. In previous years, the Murray River was looking very sad.

I will definitely say that Nyah West is a ghost town, with many shops being closed. The hair salon (so I was told by a local I was staying with) is closed. I think it is just a small supermarket, a couple of other shops (including the chemist) and the pub that remain open now. There is also a roadhouse and a couple of other businesses in neighbouring Nyah (where the highway to Swan Hill is located). Otherwise, locals would have to travel to Swan Hill (about 20 minutes away) to do their business.
