Showcasing Daniel Giles' work

Nyah West Township

Nyah West is a ghost town in many respects. Many shops have closed down and the streets are virtually empty. Being a resident of a large regional city, however, I loved being away in the rural landscape for a few days. There is a simplicity to the country towns that is often missed in large cities.

I particularly enjoyed taking images of the shop signage (that contrasts so much with the highly-technical approach used in city centres and larger towns). In fact, there is a nice simplicity to the signage that fits in with this rural location.

Speaking of signage, I also took particular interest in an old Country Fire Authority (CFA) sign and the use of the CFA’s old logo.

A venue, however, that receives a roaring trade is the Grand Hotel. It is a home for many backpackers, who spend their summers working in the surrounding farming areas. The Grand Hotel is certainly a large feature in Nyah West’s built landscape and the palm trees also provide some resemblance to a luxury hotel in a tropical location (I am more likely to imagine a grand hotel forming part of a tropical resort rather than being an old pub in a rural town).

I also experimented with perspective once again, especially with my photos of the railway line and the silo (a prominent feature along railway lines in Northern and Western Victoria).
