Around the Yard

In a few spare moments, I took these random photos from around a friend’s property in Nyah.

The sight of rust and oldness is full of character and enriches the feeling of the landscape. The small detail was important in many of these photographs. The Mallee shrub and saltbush landscape also adds a rustic charm to the place.

Some of my favourite photographs were those of a vineyard across the road. The sight of it reminded me of the experience taking photos of Big Hill Vineyard (closer to Bendigo) in autumn 2010 (click here to see these photos). They contrast with the Big Hill photos, however, as they were taken in broad daylight and in the middle of summer. The climate is also much warmer and drier, with the landscape here being flat. In addition, the Big Hill vineyard is surrounded by rolling granite hills, whilst in Nyah, it is surrounded by a semi-arid landscape.

Another highlight was taking photos of an old Holden Statesman (a 1972 model) stored in a shed. How ironic is it that a shiny black luxury car is surrounded by cobwebs. I also look at this old car and think of how solid it would be compared to a modern car. I also took a couple of photos of a 2005 model Statesman to contrast with this; the clean lines of the newer Statesman are a complete contrast to the tank-like styling of the 1972 model. Regrettably, I didn’t take any photos of a 1985 Holden Commodore or an early-1980s Ford Falcon (that were also stored there).
